Eric Gauthier, an IGERT trainee and PhD student in Chemical and Biological Engineering at Princeton spent two months working at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Pretoria, South Africa from May 28 to July 21, 2012. Eric worked with Dr. Mwalewane Modibedi and Prof. Ken Ozoemena in the Energy Materials Group at CSIR developing a method to synthesize Ir@PtML core@shell nanoparticles for comparison with the single crystalline model electrocatalyst. These materials are used in fuel cell and renewable energy technologies. During his internship, Eric presented his research at the South Africa‐Korea Hydrogen Fuel Cell Workshop held at CSIR. Eric also took the opportunity to visit former IGERT exchange student George Bepete and his research group in the Centre for Strong Materials at the University of Witwatersrand. Eric also visited the University of Pretoria, the University of Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape and HySA Catalysis.
